jGPHA Call for Papers: COVID-19 and the State of Georgia


The Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association (jGPHA) announces a call for papers with an emphasis on the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the pandemic’s impact on population health in Georgia, USA.

Submission Deadline: November 15, 2020

For the Fall 2020 issue of jGPHA, the special issue editors invite papers that address COVID-19 in the State of Georgia from a broad range of COVID-19-related topics, including:

  • Impact of public health practices implemented by public health agencies at all levels of government
  • Effectiveness of public health policies and practices, compared with other US states or territories, and jurisdictions outside the USA
  • Surveillance methods used for detecting, characterizing, and monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Use of electronic health record data from clinical settings that can help guide public health practice
  • Infectious disease modeling on which to base public health practice
  • Policy or legal approaches that have a direct impact on health services, health behaviors, or population health
  • Disparities in testing, treatment, and survival outcomes for racial or ethnic minorities and other populations at risk
  • Community health/health behavior programming (e.g. prevention, messaging efforts)
  • Impact of social or economic factors on disease transmission
  • Partnerships with traditional and nontraditional public health partners
  • Impact of COVID-19 on academic public health or the public health workforce
  • Use and effectiveness of screening and response protocols
  • Contact tracing, including the use of digital tools
  • Impact on persons in healthcare facilities (e.g., hospitals, clinics, or long-term-care facilities) or non-healthcare congregate or custodial settings (e.g., retirement or independent living communities, incarceration settings, homeless shelters, educational institutions, cruise ships, or military housing)
  • Health communication regarding information and misinformation about COVID-19 in the digital age
  • Impact on persons experiencing mental or emotional health problems (e.g., increased stress or anxiety, feelings of loneliness, or suicide ideation or attempts during shelter-in-place mandates) or other health consequences attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Ethics dilemmas and human rights challenges in COVID-19-related clinical decisions (e.g., use of ventilators) or public health decisions (e.g., social distancing and personal liberty, release of patients’ demographic information, and personal privacy concerns)

Issue Editors

Isaac Chun-Hai Fung, PhD, Associate Professor of Epidemiology, and Jessica S. Schwind, PhD, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, at the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, Georgia Southern University will serve as issue editors of the COVID-19 issue.

Publishing Information

Full manuscripts, brief reports, research protocols, and practice notes will be accepted. jGPHA levies no submission charges, or charges or fees for publication of accepted articles.
